Khancoban Pondage is in the Upper Murray region of New South Wales and is part of the Snowy Mountains hydro electric scheme.</div> <div> Despite being a small and fairly shallow impoundment, it can provide excellent fishing for brown and rainbow trout with some specimens tipping the scales at 4</div> <div> kg or more. The great condition and growth rates of the trout are due to the extensive weed beds which harbour an abundant supply of aquatic insects. Khancoban also holds a good population of redfin. There is a good concrete boat ramp and both shore based and boat anglers can experience the great fishing this destination has to offer. The fly fisher stalking the edges and the close in weed beds can get some great opportunities, </div> </tD> </tR> <tR> <tD VALIGN=TOP COLSPAN=2 HEIGHT= 584 WIDTH="542"><div> especially when polaroiding. The demands of the hydro scheme can cause the lake levels to fluctuate wildly, but when the water is rising some spectacular fishing can occur.</div> <div> <B>Target Species:</b> Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Redfin(English Perch).</div> <div> <B>Best Methods: </b>Trolling with shallow running cobra style lures and minnows. A depth sounder will help with locating the deeper drop offs and channels.</div> <div> Waggler or bubble floats with baits such as mudeyes, worms or gents can provide the hottest action at most times.</div> <div> For the fly fisher, large wet flies such as Crags Nightime or Matukas work well. Rises do occur, so dry flies are an option.</div> <div> <B>Best Times: </b>September on with some big fish usually taken early in the season.</div> <div> <B>Hot Spots:</b> For float fishing, the trees opposite and upstream of the boat ramp, the islands and the area in front of the power station outlet are good producers.</div> <div> Trolling along the Swampy Plains River course on the far bank from the boat ramp will get you into deeper water.
